Profession: Video Game Designer
Biography: Hidetaka Miyazaki created the Dark Souls series, which established a new subgenre of action role-playing games known for their high difficulty, and serves as president of FromSoftware.
Miyazaki grew up in Shizuoka, Japan, where he developed a love for reading. He graduated from Keio University with a social science degree and initially worked as an account manager at Oracle Corporation.
Inspired by the game "Ico" (2001), however, Miyazaki changed careers at age 29, joining FromSoftware as a game planner in 2004.
At FromSoftware, Miyazaki worked on the Armored Core series before taking charge of a struggling project that became "Demon's Souls" (2009). The game's success led to the creation of "Dark Souls" (2011), which gained widespread acclaim and has influenced many subsequent games.
Miyazaki subsequently became president of FromSoftware in 2014. He continued to direct successful games, including "Bloodborne" (2015), "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice" (2019), and "Elden Ring" (2022). For "Elden Ring," Miyazaki collaborated with author George R. R. Martin, and the game sold over 25 million copies.
His game design philosophy emphasizes challenging gameplay and storytelling through environmental details. Miyazaki draws inspiration from literature, manga, and his personal experiences. His games often feature European-inspired architecture and innovative multiplayer elements.
Miyazaki received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Golden Joystick Awards and was included in Time's 100 Most Influential People list in 2023. Meanwhile, in his personal life, Miyazaki is a father of two children.
