Newley plays an introspective film singing idol who re-lives his part-real, part-illusionary past in a movie within a movie, drawing on strange characters to people this past as well as lovelies who line up in wild expectancy as Heironymus plucks them one by one.

Milton Berle in the fetching character-name of Good Time Eddie Filth is his agent who lures him into his career of concupiscence, and George Jessel as The Presence, perhaps an advance angel of death, occasionally emerges out of the blue before disappearing again to spout shaggy jokes as pointless parables.

Married to Polyester Poontang (Joan Collins), Heironymus cannot forget Mercy Humppe, the beautiful innocent so deliciously cavorted by Connie Kreski, one-time Playboy bunny.
